Keep looking straight ahead, without turning aside. Know where you are headed,
and you will stay on solid ground. Don’t make a mistake by turning to the right or the left. Proverbs 4:25-27
For some reason, when I read these verses, I picture a person walking a tightrope. They are carefully placing one foot in front of the other. Yet, they must remain calm and focused because one false move could send them tumbling to the ground.
Did you know our body usually follows the path of our eyes? For example, sometimes I like to jog on the road leading out of town. It's a busy road, and I have been warned by many people that it's probably not safe, but it's one of my favorite places to run because it's straight and flat. The problem is that when a driver sees me, their car drifts in my direction. Why? It's because, naturally, we will turn in the direction we a looking.
Spiritually, we are all on a course-the path of God's purpose for our life. When we speak, act, and follow His path, we experience His will for us. The truth is, we all know this. We understand that God has a plan and when we follow Him, we are blessed.
This path can sometimes feel like a tightrope. It's hard to balance everything. All our efforts are tainted. Our knees can buckle, we misstep all the time, and it's only a matter of time before we find ourselves in free fall.
Before we lose all hope, you need to remember these wonderful verses. The wisdom written here will help us on our path to God's will. We must look ahead, know where we are going, and stay on solid ground.
How do we do this?
We must keep our focus on Christ. He is our hope. Jesus' work of redemption means that the days of balancing everything are gone. We are drawn to that which we are looking. It seems to me we too often make a mistake by turning to the right of the left when the answer to our questions can only be found by focusing straight ahead, knowing where we are headed, and and staying on solid ground.
Looking straight ahead means we Seek His face first. Get to know the Lord by reading the Word, journaling, praying, and just hiding it deep in our heart. Knowing where we are headed is understanding that Jesus has reversed our fate! The threats we once faced are gone, and our life has been made new. Staying on solid ground means that when the storms come and the wind blows, we are able to stand because we stand on the Rock. We stand on the truth. And we will not be shaken.
How have you been walking lately? Are you in free fall? Have your eyes been focusing on the wrong things which have been drawing you away from Christ?
Whatever your situation is, I have good news! You're not beyond His reach. Call out to Christ today. It's not too late for you to Look, Know, and Stay.
